From Moonlight Studies to Master Architect: The Inspiring Journey of Anitha Ingabire
KIVUMU, RWANDA — Behind every successful community initiative is a story of fierce resilience. For Anitha Ingabire, the 25-year-old architectural engineer, real estate agent, and founder of the Anitha Humanity Initiative, the path to economic self-reliance was forged under the glow of the moon.
Her journey from a remote village in the Western Province to the halls of Chongqing University serves as the living blueprint for her social enterprise, built to uplift single mothers and vulnerable youth across Rwanda.
A Childhood Built Under Moonlight
Anitha’s hardships began early when her father deserted her and her teenage mother, leaving them to navigate severe poverty with meager means in the Kivumu sector of Rutsiro District. Despite the depression, hopelessness, and financial desperation that followed, Anitha’s mother sacrificed everything to keep her daughter in school.
Growing up in an off-the-grid village, Anitha refused to let darkness stop her education:
“Despite the challenges my mother encountered, she was able to take me to school. I went to Buganamana Primary School. While there, I poured myself into my studies to the extent that I would use the moonlight at night since our area was off-the-grid at the time.”
Her fierce focus paid off. While studying at G.S. Kivumu, her academic excellence caught the attention of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Rwanda. After emerging as the top-performing student in the entire district during national exams, FAWE stepped in with a life-changing scholarship to the prestigious Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare (GSOB) Indatwa n’inkesha
The Power of Skills: A Foreign Language Sets Things in Motion
At GSOB, Anitha recognized that true self-reliance requires multi-dimensional skills. She purposefully committed to learning Chinese—a discipline that unlocked her first professional breaks.
During school holidays, she applied for a hard-hat job at a road construction site in Rubavu overseen by a Chinese company. Leveraging her new language skills, she worked simultaneously as a translator, helping the supervisor communicate with local workers. This early hustle fully funded her scholastic materials for the rest of high school.
Anitha’s linguistic and intellectual talents soon took her to the global stage:
- National Debate Champion: Won the Confucius Institutes' national school debate.
- Global Ambassador: Represented Rwanda in an international debate in China, competing against participants from over 60 countries.
- Higher Education: Earned a full scholarship to study Architecture at Chongqing University, graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in 2020.

The Multifaceted Woman Who Wears Many Hats
Upon returning to Rwanda in 2020, Anitha rejected standard employment, opting instead to build her own capital. She ventured aggressively into the Kigali real estate market—buying and selling plots, drawing architectural designs, and taking short courses in tourism, hairstyling, and tailoring.
“I haven’t lived without a job since I am a multifaceted woman. You don’t have to run out of funds when you have both arms. You can do anything to survive.”
Today, as she prepares to launch the Anitha Humanity Initiative CBC to teach these exact technical trades to the next generation, Anitha credits her success to the two pillars of her life: her mother's endless sacrifices and an unshakeable refusal to surrender to circumstances.
Her message to young girls and single mothers facing hardships is clear:
“To anyone going through a tough situation, understand that it’s your time to rewrite your life story. Never consider escaping through substance abuse; it’s not a solution but a sign of surrender.”
